Be here, be seen, belong.

I believe leadership is a choice: we are all leaders in one way or another, and when we choose to be responsible for what is happening around us, we are able to work together in a way that includes and utilizes the unique talents of everyone, most particularly YOU.

A lot (too much) of leadership training is rooted in buzzwords. By exploring and implementing straightforward and actionable principles, I invite you to reclaim the different aspects of the compassionate, connected and creative leader within you.

Leaders:

  • Are present and exude presence (Be here): there’s been plenty of research on this. When you choose to be you: honor your values, leverage on your strengths, and are open and transparent about your mistakes, you make everyone else feel great and you enable them to be themselves.
  • Choose curiosity over judgement, and fear: when you are curious, you have conversations not debates; you seek to understand not judge; you aim to learn not to prove; you intend to expand ideas not to please the person. You don’t need to be the best, when you can be better. Be a Learner-Leader.
  • Listen: the highest form of respect is to listen to what others have to say. When you are talking, you are most probably speaking of something you already know, when you are listening, chances are you will learn something new. Next time you hear yourself talking, consider this: WAIT (Why Am I Talking)!
  • Advocate for your team, and yourself (Be seen): you have the vision, you believe in the cause, you plan the plan, you have the confidence with yourself and your team, otherwise, why do you lead at all?
  • Inspire, coach, guide and teach: in that order. You have the situational awareness to know what’s needed most to bring out the best in others. The new generation wants different elements from work, command and control will naturally erode, are you ready for it?
  • Serve, partner and synergize (Belong): you are less of a driver for KPI as you think, you are the support network, you let the best person do the job, you bring in different voices and talents, you divide responsibilities and take turns, and you are 100 percent responsible all of the time.
  • Intuit and innovate: you are imaginative, intuitive and insightful, have the courage and commitment to act on what you sense in a way that is innovative. You are not just leading a project, a team or even an organization, you slow down and observe the deeper implications of what is happening beyond, in the collective ‘we’.

Leadership is to practice moving beyond our fears and giving in to love over and over in multiple ways, not because it’s the right and noble thing to do, but because it is wildly exciting and deliciously alive. We must reach for this responsibility and ownership as much as we are able, forgiving ourselves and others when we fail and continuing to believe that recovery is only a heartbeat a n single choice away.
