Be brief, be brilliant, be human.
‘Communication makes the world go round. It facilitates human connections, and allows us to learn, grow, and progress. It’s not just about speaking or reading, but understanding what is being said — and in some cases what is not being said. Communication is the most important skill any leader can possess.’ – Richard Branson
Communication is an art that comes with a lot of work. To communicate elegantly and effectively:
- Brevity is an imperative (Be brief) – Long story, short. If you want to get more, decide to say less. Being brief is your non-negotiable standard in this attention-deficit economy.
- Conversation instead of presentation – Talk with your audience, not at them. Give them a way to interact and participate.
- Discipline is freedom (Be brilliant) – Mastery is basic skills done perfectly, every time. It takes time and practice to be ready to say less.
- Tell, not sell – Telling your audience a well-researched and well-structured story is more effective than just selling them your point of view.
- Start with Why – Audience care about ‘why is it important to me?’. Answer this pressing question, define the problem you are trying to solve for them, everything that follows is a logical way to resolve that problem.
- Listen, listen, listen – The only way that helps you determine what’s important to your audience, and related to them.
- Your audience will understand, only when they feel heard and understood (Be human) – Communication is personal. Listen to the person, talk to the person: their joy, fear, sadness, anger, and all the other emotions. They will reciprocate, when they know you are real.
